The Bakersfield misfires were numerous for 65 minutes Wednesday at Rabobank Arena, but the Condors were dead-on when the game against the Ontario Reign came down to a skills competition. The first three Bakersfield skaters --Stephane Goulet, Dan Sexton and MacGregor Sharp -- all scored and goaltender Timo Pielmeier shut down three Ontario skaters as the Condors won 4-3 in a shootout. It was the first shootout game of the season for the Condors (9-6-0), who remain atop the ECHL Pacific Division.

When Anaheim assigned defenseman Mark Mitera to the Condors on Saturday, the numbers no longer added up. With Mitera, the fourth Anaheim-assigned D-man, the defensive corps swelled to nine -- a number not really sustainable at the ECHL level. On Wednesday, that number was reduced to eight as the Condors released veteran defenseman Shaun Fisher.

We have lots of young people who need to play and at this point of his career he needs to play and he wasn't going to get the ice time.   -Marty Raymond

For the past few seasons, Andrew Ianiero has strolled into training camp knowing he'd have a job with the Condors when the regular season got underway. Friday, Ianiero found himself in a different situation as training camp got under way on the familiar ice at Bakersfield Ice Sports Center -- trying to prove to coach Marty Raymond that he deserves a spot as a forward on totally revamped team. Raymond did not offer contracts to any players from last season but did invite Ianiero to camp on a tryout bas

The Bakersfield Condors open training camp today at the Bakersfield Ice Sports Center where competition for a forward position should be intense. The Condors are expected to have 17 forwards in camp, five of those assigned to the team by the Anaheim Ducks. The Bakersfield Condors added two more players to their roster on Tuesday -- defenseman Shaun Fisher and forward Adam Naglich -- bringing to 16 the number of players under contract for the upcoming season. Fisher, who played briefly for the Condors late in the 2005-06 season, is the first veteran signed by the Condors. Fisher, 30, played the final seven regular season games for the Condors, netting one assists, then put in one goal and nine assists in 14 playoff games.

It took most of the summer, but the the long-expected announcement that the Bakersfield Condors were renewing their National Hockey League affiliation with the Anaheim Ducks finally came on Wednesday. "We would have liked to announced year two of our affiliation sooner but some things just take time," said Condors president Matthew Riley. "We've had this intent for a number of months; it was just a matter of crossing the t's and dotting the i's."

"Tell me something good about the Condors," pleaded a season-ticket holder Tuesday morning. Alas, I had nothing for him -- good, bad or in between. Nada. Zilch.
